ClearType

I can see …

ClearType information
"ClearType is a software technology developed by Microsoft that improves the readability of text on existing LCDs (Liquid Crystal Displays), such as laptop screens, Pocket PC screens and flat panel monitors. With ClearType font technology, the words on your computer screen look almost as sharp and clear as those printed on a piece of paper."

On Windows XP:

  1. Right click on the desktop and select 'Properties'.
  2. Select the 'Appearance' tab and press the 'Effects…' button.
  3. Check the tick box next to the words 'Use the following method to smooth edges of screen fonts' and select 'ClearType' from the drop down box.
  4. Close the Effects dialog by clicking 'OK' and click 'Apply' to complete the process.

You can also turn ClearType on at the ClearType Web interface. This web site also allows you to tune ClearType for your own personal preference and for your display. Tuning ClearType makes an adjustment to Windows XP's 'contrast' or 'gamma' value set for your screen.

If you have a problem with blurry type on CRT monitors, you can turn off Microsoft ClearType for Microsoft Word 2003 Reading Layout mode.
To see how Clear Type works on your monitor (and find your gamma value), see:
