CSS, PHP, and all that stuff

Collections of suggestions

Under the belief that more information leads to more understanding, here is a site that may help you round the corners of web design and function. Besides CSS templates there are PHP code nibblets.

In 2003 artypapers was created by R. Marie Cox as a springboard for ideas and a working space of technical implementation -- a place to test and build an extendable collection of core classes (alliteration!) that acts as an application framework for a diverse set of projects and applications.

Slide on a Web Page

Make it an Internet show

A little bit ago we talked about putting a live web page directly on a slide:
Web Page on a Slide.

This hint is about converting your PowerPoint show into a web presentation.

Here's a slide show on the web showing how it's done:

RDPSlides.com has this article:

Link to PDF

Hyperlink to page numbers

The article tells how to link to named locations, but in most cases all you'll need is the page number:

Linking to Pages or Destinations Within PDFs
Dan Shea Associate Editor

Linking To Specific Pages

This is significantly simpler than linking to named destinations because it doesn't require any special steps to be taken in the preparation of the PDF file. I personally favor the page-linking method for this reason. In order to link through to a specific PDF page, begin with the domain, as you would for any web link:

http://www.mydomain.com/

Then add the name of the PDF document:

http://www.mydomain.com/myPDF.pdf

Then append "#page=" followed by the desired page number. For example, if you were looking to link to page 7:

http://www.mydomain.com/myPDF.pdf#page=7

So in all, the HTML link code would be:

<a href="http://www.mydomain.com/myPDF.pdf#page=7">Link text</a>

Surrogate Image Server

Temporary

"When posting on message boards or blogs, often you want to show or link to an image on another website. Directly showing or linking to that image is called hot-linking. It's generally bad because it leeches bandwidth from the host site, and as a result many webmasters have their servers set up to prohibit hot-linking.

ImgRed.com lets you simply enter the original URL in your post as you normally would, but with http://imgred.com/ written before the URL. When this is viewed, the image will be copied once* to imgred.com, and from then on the image will always be served from imgred.com instead of the host site.

*ImgRed is not an archive service, and occasionally its cache is cleared out (once a month or so), so images are not literally cached forever.

Embed Media

Code machine

The code necessary to embed a video or animation file on a web page can be a bother.

The University of California Center for Instructional Technology has a generator that will create the necessary code to insert Flash, Real Media, Quick Time, or Windows Media files using HTML.

Busted Links

Verify

On the Menu bar, go to View>Reports>Problems>Hyperlinks.

You will able to check if any links have failed and need to be fixed.

It's called Broken Hyperlinks in pre-2003 versions.

With the Expression Web Designer go to Site>Reports>Problems>Hyperlinks.

There are a few third-party shareware programs that do the same thing.

One of them is:

Xenu's Link Sleuth

It's free and will create a report that can be saved for reference.
