HD Photo plug

Released for Photoshop

Microsoft Download: HD Photo Plug-in for Adobe Photoshop Software

"HD Photo offers compression with up to twice the efficiency of JPEG, with fewer damaging artifacts, resulting in higher-quality images that are one-half the file size.

In addition, HD Photo offers increased image fidelity, preserving the entire original image content and enabling higher-quality exposure and color adjustments in the image. This new format offers the ability to decode only the information needed for any resolution or region, or the option to manipulate the image as compressed data.

'With HD Photo, we're taking a new approach to creating and editing photos that simply isn't available to photographers with today's formats,' said Amir Majidimehr, corporate vice president of the Consumer Media Technology Group at Microsoft. 'HD Photo fully preserves the original image fidelity with high dynamic range while still allowing for significant improvement in compression size.'

In addition, HD Photo offers both lossless and lossy image compression, and can retain the full dynamic range and color gamut data from a camera's sensor. Also, because making adjustments to common color balance and exposure settings won't discard or truncate data as other common bitmap formats typically do, it's easier to "undo" those changes at a later time. As a result, significantly smaller files can be created while still retaining optimum picture quality."

Press Release

CNet - Vista to give HD Photo format more exposure

"HD Photo is a new file format for continuous-tone still images that surpasses the limitations of existing image formats. HD Photo supports a wide range of features including:
  • Multiple color formats for display or print
  • Fixed or floating point high-dynamic-range image encoding
  • Lossless or high-quality lossy compression
  • Efficient decoding for multiple resolutions and subregions
  • Minimal overhead for format conversion or transformations during decode

HD Photo delivers a lightweight, high performance algorithm with a small memory footprint that enables practical, in-device encoding and decoding. It delivers compression quality comparable with JPEG-2000 and more than twice the quality of JPEG."

Nisqually Wildlife Reserve

This show was put together using a program called Muvee.
It analyzes the pictures and the music and combines the two. There are a goodly number of themes that can be applied as well.

New Video Player

(and free server storage)

"Viddler is very different from other video-delivery based websites, because we stream video our videos instead of having the user download it.

That means you get to watch videos without having to wait until the entire video to load.

This is especially useful when wanting to view the last few minutes of a very long video.

It's a secure system and prevents other people from watching the video (in ways they're not supposed to) or ripping the video off the site.

Video that you host with Viddler can not be stolen, or used in any fashion, unless you set your sharing options to allow it."

Time is short, the world is small

Tacoma - Paris

This picture was submitted to 24 hours of Flickr

Grand Opening

It didn't make it to the book, but it was displayed on a monitor at the "Wanted" Gallery in Paris.

Siobhán Silke saw it and sent me a picture of it.

"There was a slideshow on a big screen.
It was a great night, and we got a chance to meet some of the Flickr staff

Flickr's not hard to use, but it's nice to have someone walk through the steps.

"Flickr is a popular photo sharing and hosting service with advanced and powerful features. It supports an active and engaged community where people share and explore each other's photos.

You can share and host hundreds of your own pictures on Flickr without paying a dime. There's also a pro service that gets you unlimited storage and sharing for about two bucks a month, making it one of the cheapest hosting sites around."

Old Photographs

Collections

I found another source of great old pictures.

Conveniently named:

Old-Picture.com

"It has been said that a picture is worth a thousand words. Even with a thousand words, how do you describe the look in a Mother's eye who does not know how she will feed her children, or the look on the face of a paratrooper minutes before the D-day invasion. The simple answer is that there are some stories that can only be told with pictures. This site is dedicated to those stories, and those pictures."

Greetings

From a 13 year old girl

In 2003, I bought a post card on e-bay. It is a picture of the newly completed Stadium High School.

The postmark is October 12th, 1906. It was addressed to someone in Montezuma, Iowa.
(no street address)

In 2006 Stadium had its Centennial Celebration and I put the postcard on the web page.
(CelebrateStadium.com)

Just the other day I received this email:

"The "Helen M who wrote the note alongside the picture of Stadium High (Tahoma High then) was my Mom....Helen McDonald, class of 1912.

In 1915 she married John Stedman Wood, also class of 1912. They raised 3 boys, Donald, Philip and myself...Jack M. Wood class of '41."

It's an itsy, bitsy, tiny world.
